Iceland is connected to both North America and Europe with high bandwidth submarine fiber cables. Both the overseas connection and the backhaul is redundant. Even further trans-Atlantic high speed connections, with links to Iceland, are planned.
Greenland Connect to Greenland/Canada – 1.9 Terabits/s
Danice to Danmark -24.8 terabits/s
Farice to Scotland – 8 Terabits/s
Iceland’s unique temperate oceanic climate makes year-round ambient cooling possible and thus optimises the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) to save energy and costs.
Iceland focuses on favorable environment for businesses in general, including low corporate tax of only 20%, availability of land and green energy, and efficient business environment in an European legislative framework. New direct investment projects in Iceland can apply for incentives. The incentives include certain derogations from taxes and charges or come in the form of training aid and lease of land. The World Bank consistently ranks the Icelandic economy in the top 15 on ease of doing business.
According to the Global Competiveness Report 2014-2015, published by World Economic Forum, Iceland‘s main strengths include Technological Readiness and Higher Education and Training. A 2012 Reykjavik University Report; Mapping of Human Resources for Data Centers. confirmed that the data center industry can find the skills and education necessary in Iceland, both in engineering and the IT industry. There is significant engineering experience in Iceland regarding large and complex projects, e.g. due to the energy infrastructure. The number of graduates in ICT and engineering is growing and the Universities in Iceland are open for direct cooperation with the data center industry to meet future demand for skills.
Look further ahead and locate your data center where your operations can grow. Iceland is the only country in Western Europe that still has large resources of hydroelectric power and geothermal energy remaining to be harnessed to meet future demands. A new and reliable power infrastructure, available long term energy contracts and abundance of land for development ensures that the future growth of your data center will not be constrained.
