Iceland is connected to both North America and Europe with high bandwidth submarine fiber cables, operated by Farice. Both the overseas connection and the backhaul is redundant. Data Centers in Iceland enjoy both low latency and security.
Latency Comparison
The main national fibre network, operated by Míla is 1,972km/1,225 miles and is based on figure eight structure for redundancy. Capable of connecting all Farice submarine cable landing stations with POP, s in 19 locations around Iceland. The initial capacity is 40*fibre-optic channels DWDM transmission system capable of carrying multiple of 10Gb/s and/or 100Gb/s. The total optical fibre in the whole trunk network is 5,151 km/3,200 miles connecting all urban and rural telecommunication sites in Iceland. Mila also operates an extensive microwave trunk network in many rural areas in Iceland. This year (2022) Mila is working on upgrading the DWDM optical system to flex-grid DWDM optical system capable of carrying 400Gb/s connections which is planned to be put in use early next year (2023).
